City of Poway's Drought Management Efforts

The City of Poway imports 100% of its water supply. Southern California’s water supply faces significant challenges, including historic dry weather conditions and environmental restrictions on the amount of water pumping from Northern California. Indications from the Metropolitan Water District and the San Diego County Water Authority, Poway’s main water suppliers, are that mandatory restrictions are highly probable for sometime in 2009.

In January 2008, the Poway City Council declared a Stage I water condition. Since that time, efforts to raise public awareness about Poway’s water supply challenge have been greatly expanded, and additional resources have been offered to help reduce water consumption.

In addition to an expanded public education program, in December 2008, the City Council adopted a new water conservation ordinance, which is more consistent with how other water agencies in the region are approaching drought management.

In winter 2009, the Poway City Council will consider other drought management tools, such as new financial incentives, educational programs, and possibly a conservation rate structure.
