Rate Increases Set for January 1, 2009
The San Diego City Council, on Nov. 17 and 18, 2009, approved adjustments to water rates. The new rates will begin on January 1, 2009. The new rates are designed to recover the increased cost charged by the County Water Authority for wholesale water; and a separate, temporary, water rate increase to fund the Indirect Potable Reuse/Reservoir Augmentation Demonstration Project.

Emergency Water Regulations Ordinance
On December 2, the San Diego City Council approved changes to the Emergency Water Regulations Ordinance (PDF: 47K). These new Ordinance, which will go into effect on January 1, 2009, includes water use prohibitions that are in effect year-round. It also includes restrictions on using water if increased conservation is necessary due to drought.
The Ordinance was passed because the region’s water supplies remain impacted by environmental stresses, such as an eight-year drought in the Colorado River basin and reduced snow pack and runoff in Northern California. In addition to these environmental stresses, court-ordered pumping restriction on the State Water Project went into effect in December 2007. These are the primary sources of water to the San Diego region.
